The Rising Need for ESL Software

It has been noticed that in the last decade and a half, there have been an increased number of classrooms around the world that have started using software in imparting education.  The use of computers has become so pervasive that it is often said that virtually every student in a classroom depends on the computer to enhance their learning capabilities.

However, with regards to ESL learners, most of them do not have access to computers and therefore are not aware of ESL software available to increase their proficiency in a foreign language or in English.

However, that has slowly changed in the last couple of years. There is now a variety of ESL software which is now available for use for adult ESL instruction. Some of these ESL software types include drill and practice programs like various tutorials which help. Then there are simulations and games which help in ESL instruction.

ESL software also provides problem-solving programs and other productivity tools which include word processing programs, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, and desktop publishing programs.

There are some other important things to be noted about ESL software. There are some educational software that is designed specifically and exclusively for ESL purposes. This usually includes ESL publisher software and courseware which can be very helpful in acquiring a second language. It is a well-known fact that this type of ESL software is relatively easy to integrate into the classroom. Also, quite often much of the matter that is available on the software does not differ majorly from the book it supplements. Also, it generally does not take due advantage of the simultaneous sound, video, and text accessories that are computers provide.

Then there is also courseware which is specifically designed to be used as a course, as opposed to supplementing one. Courseware typically uses all the available accessories that a computer provides. Therefore, it should be noted that most courseware is pretty expensive to purchase and does not allow much variety to be incorporated in the curriculum.

In selecting ESL software for a classroom, a teachers needs to consider and effectively determine how that particular software will enable him/her to meet his/her objectives. The teacher needs to be absolutely certain of the fact that the software will help enhance the curriculum and also ensure that the students face no major issues in using the software.
